I was born and raised on an isolated farm in South Carolina. There were about ten relatives living there most of the time. I moved to Philadelphia after high school. I was struck by the large buildings and bright lights of the city.
Soon after I arrived in Pennsylvania, a relative introduced me to John. We fell in love, and we married after a year or so. We raised and educated our three children together in Ardmore, Pa. He died after 52 years of marriage.
While the children were growing up I took classes at community college. I also worked at GlaxoSmithKline, in quality assurance. I retired in 1999, expecting to sit around and read – but instead I find I am doing much more than that!
I joined the Y and met wonderful friends. Later I served on the Board of the Main Line YMCA and the Haverford Area YMCA. It is a rewarding commitment. We raise money for scholarships and free programs for families in need.
I am an active member at the Zion Baptist Church of Ardmore. I teach Sunday school to the children. It is a vibrant community with a great choir. I especially love participating in their annual interfaith concert.
And of course, I am the grandmother of three.
